Coast & Country

30 October – 23 November 2019

A showcase for some of the best prints from members of the Society of Wood Engravers. This exhibition focusses on wood engravings inspired by the coast and the countryside, and the varied flora and fauna that thrive in it.

Whilst contemporary wood engravers all use the same tools and techniques as those developed over 200 years ago, the prints display a huge variety of personal interpretations and styles.

In the late 18th century when Thomas Bewick first adapted his metal engraving tools and applied them to cutting into the endgrain of boxwood, it was to nature that he turned as inspiration for his images. His wood engravings depicting such activities as a boy crossing the river on stilts and a maiden gathering flowers have given us a valuable historic record of life in the country during that period. His impressive collection of bird and animal engravings are legendary as some of the finest examples of their kind. Bewick’s ‘type high’ blocks meant that text and images could be printed together for the first time, a technique which rapidly caught on and was widely used throughout the nineteenth century.

The Coast & Country exhibition has over a hundred wood engravings, woodcuts and lino cuts selected from the Society's international membership.

Restless Earth

‘I work with liminal spaces
where transformations take place -
between nautical twilight and dawn -
where tides come in and retreat -
and where clouds form and evaporate.

'My work is a witness to the permanent impermanence of this deliciously restless earth we are fortunate enough to inhabit.’
Frances Hatch, August 2019

Frances is only too aware of the impossibility of  keeping pace with dawn as it breaks, but experiencing her work we are in no doubt that she has witnessed many dawns.
She uses the very stuff of each place she works in and integrates it into her work. Each work is therefore site specific. This new collection was made along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset where she lives. Frances also wished to include several works she has kept aside made in the North West Highlands of Scotland a few years ago. The Applecross Hills are particularly special to her.

‘It’s sky and its contours are as mobile as the sea!’

‘I’ve always worked en plein air- and when one is outside and exposed to whatever weather there is:  dust blows into paint- sand hoppers slither across the paper - frost forms in it - all sorts of unexpected inclusions arrive unbidden. It was a small step to begin to consciously engage with the earth itself and develop ways of making a stable paint film with it. Geology brings me into ever deeper connection with the spirit of the place I’m working in’.

Hitchens: Alfred, Ivon, John, Simon

Work by four generations of the Hitchens family: Ivon Hitchen's father Alfred, his son John and his grandson Simon.

Held to coincide with Pallant House Gallery's major exhibition Ivon Hitchens: Space through Colour.
The Kevis House Gallery exhibition is held in partnership with the 2019 Petworth Festival.

Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) moved to live near Petworth, deep in the woods at Graffham, after his London home was bombed in 1940. He continued to live and work there until his death in 1979,

As well as Ivon Hitchens pictures on loan from Pallant House Gallery, two of his paintings were offered for sale.

Work was shown by other artists inspired by Ivon Hitchens, including Peter Iden (1945-2012), Jill Bray, Emma Jamison and Tuëma Pattie.

"From El Greco to Turner, from Monet to Hockney, landscape has served as a source of inspiration and exploration for artists throughout the centuries. This fascination with landscape; pictorially, lyrically and conceptually has proved to be a deep well of creative stimulus to draw from. For generations of our family it has been a guide, friend and sparring partner that has challenged and enriched our art and our lives. This exhibition sheds light on the different ways our family has worked with landscape."
